News: what we learned
News helps us avoid danger more than it makes profit. Banks get it seconds before us.
Where our news comes from
- Headlines: investingLive (the old ForexLive), Reuters through Finnhub, and CNBC. We check them every 60 seconds.
- Economic calendar: ForexFactory's free data file.
- Speed: our bot is about 2 minutes behind its sources.
Problems we found
| Problem | Example |
|---|---|
| Social media is faster, but has a lot of fake news | A "nuclear warning" post. |
| Our keyword filter missed real news | "US strikes Iran" was missed, because "strikes" was not a keyword. Fixed on 3 Nov. |
| Our keyword filter gave false alarms | "Fridge cyberattack" raised an alarm because of the word "attack". |
| Some sites block bots | ForexFactory's news page returns a 403 block. We don't break through blocks. We already read its fast source, ForexLive. |
Ideas to test
A small AI check of headlines (about $0.30 a month). Also, record each headline and the price move after it, to train our own model later, in January.
